Donauinselfest Vienna
Every June, the Danube Island in Vienna hosts one of the most extraordinary events in the world of music festivals: the Donauinselfest. With up to three million visitors over three days, it is consistently ranked as the world’s largest free music festival. In 2025 it returned for its 42nd edition — and entry remains completely free.

A festival born from Viennese politics
The Donauinselfest was founded in 1983 by Vienna’s Social Democratic Party as a free cultural event for all Viennese citizens. What began as a political gesture quickly became one of Europe’s most beloved music festivals, transcending its political origins to become a genuine celebration of music, culture and Viennese community life.
What makes it extraordinary
With three million visitors and over 600 hours of programming across multiple stages, the Donauinselfest is simply gigantic. The programme runs from Austrian pop and rock to international stars, folk music, electronic dance music and hip-hop. The island itself is a unique festival location — a long, narrow artificial island in the Danube, with water views and a natural festival atmosphere. Despite hosting international headliners, all concerts are completely free.
What makes Donauinselfest so special is simply its scale. With three million visitors and more than 600 hours of programming spread across multiple stages, the festival is enormous by every measure. The line-up moves effortlessly between Austrian pop and rock, international stars, folk music, electronic dance music and hip-hop — there’s something for almost every musical taste.
Visitors don’t have to choose the way they might at other festivals: anyone singing along to an Austrian pop star in the afternoon can just as easily switch to a dance stage or a hip-hop act elsewhere on the island that same evening.
An island built for the occasion
The location itself contributes just as much to the atmosphere as the music. The Donau-Insel is a long, narrow artificial island in the middle of the river, with water on both sides and a relaxed outdoor feel rarely found at other major festivals. Visitors spread out across the whole island, from busy stages with international headliners to quieter corners where people simply lie on the grass looking out over the Danube.
For Viennese residents, the festival has become a fixed part of summer: whole families, groups of friends and colleagues arrange to spend a day on the island together, with a picnic on the grass as a standard part of the plan.
What truly sets the festival apart is that its scale never comes at the expense of accessibility. Despite hosting international headliners, every concert remains entirely free — exactly the idea the festival was built on forty years ago. For the organisers, that’s not an afterthought but the whole point: culture that’s reachable for everyone, regardless of what’s in their wallet.
Donauinselfest takes place in 2027 from 25 to 27 June. Access to all stages and performances is entirely free. The festival grounds are on the Donau-Insel in Vienna, easily reached by metro lines U1 and U6, both of which run directly to the island.
