In June, Lisbon is not just Lisbon. The entire month of June is dedicated to the Festas de Lisboa — the city’s festival month, culminating in the night of 12 to 13 June: the night of Santo António, the city’s patron saint. The alleys of Alfama fill up, the smell of grilled sardines fills the air, fado sounds from open doors, and people dance in the streets until deep in the night. Everything is free, everything is for everyone.

The night of Santo António
The peak falls on 12 June, as the night of Santo António begins. In Alfama, Mouraria, Bairro Alto and other traditional neighbourhoods, the party continues until morning. Everyone eats sardines, drinks vinho verde or ginjinha, and dances in the street.
Marchas Populares
Every year, Lisbon’s neighbourhoods march in colourful processions along the Avenida da Liberdade, each with their own costume, music and choreography. Free to watch from the side of the road.
Fado in the streets
In Alfama, fado always plays, but in June it plays everywhere — from open windows, on small stages in alleyways, from cafés that open their doors. The most authentic place and moment to hear fado.
