How it started
Serralves em Festa was founded in 2006 as a way to open the Fundação Serralves — Porto’s museum of contemporary art — to a wider audience. What began as a modest open day quickly grew into Portugal’s largest contemporary arts event. In 2026 the festival celebrates its twentieth edition, from 29–31 May.
What to expect
The festival runs non-stop, day and night. Light installations illuminate the park, musicians play on multiple stages, and dancers and theatre makers perform in the museum, the Art Deco villa and the expansive park. The combination of the architecturally impressive Serralves estate — designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira — and the rich programme makes Serralves em Festa a unique experience.
What makes Serralves em Festa unique is the combination of the festival programme and the setting itself. The grounds of the Fundação Serralves were designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira, one of Portugal’s most influential architects, and that architectural quality forms a backdrop unlike anything found at any other festival in Europe. During the day there’s room for workshops aimed at children and families, while at night the grounds turn into an atmospheric festival site full of light, music and performance, spread across the park’s gardens and pavilions. The festival never really stops: from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, there’s always something happening somewhere on the grounds.
In 2026 the festival marked its twentieth edition under the theme “Novos Horizontes” (New Horizons), with particular attention to emerging international artists alongside established names — a style of programming typical of how Serralves em Festa keeps renewing itself year after year without losing its core identity.
Low-threshold by design
What further sets the festival apart from comparable art events elsewhere in Europe is how low the threshold is. Despite the artistic ambition and the impressive setting, there’s no ticket price standing between visitors and the festival: anyone who wants to enter the park can simply walk in, whether that’s a family arriving during the day for the workshops or night owls turning up after midnight for the final performances.
Serralves em Festa takes place at the Fundação Serralves, Rua Dom João de Castro 210, in Porto; the next edition is planned for late May 2027, with exact dates announced on the website. Access to the entire festival is entirely free. The grounds are reachable by metro lines B, C, E or F toward Casa da Música, followed by about a fifteen-minute walk, or by bus 201 or 203, which stop closer to the entrance. The festival begins Friday evening and runs through to Sunday afternoon.
