Crowd celebrating at a Liberation Day festival on 5 May in the Netherlands

Liberation Day festivals across the Netherlands

Every year on 5 May the Netherlands bursts with celebration. On Liberation Day no fewer than 14 official liberation festivals are held across the country. More than 200 artists perform on 40 stages and hundreds of thousands of visitors join in — together making it the biggest music event in the Netherlands. And entry is completely free.

From north to south and east to west: in Leeuwarden, Almere, Assen, Den Bosch, The Hague, Groningen, Roermond, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Vlissingen, Wageningen, Zwolle and Haarlem, music fills the streets on this day. Zwolle draws more than 130,000 visitors to Park de Wezenlanden every year, Rotterdam welcomes over 100,000 people at the Euromastpark, and Assen attracts tens of thousands of revellers to the Baggelhuizerplas.

But the absolute highlight? Without a doubt Haarlem. Bevrijdingspop in Haarlem attracts visitors from far and wide, with a busy market, the Plein van de Vrijheid full of street performers and an extensive children’s programme. The atmosphere is unbeatable, the location beautiful and the programme varied for young and old. In short: if you really want to enjoy Liberation Day, you know where to go.

On 5 May the Houtpark in Haarlem is the centre of Liberation Day in North Holland every year. Bevrijdingsfestival Haarlem — also known as Bevrijdingspop — is one of the fourteen official liberation festivals in the Netherlands and attracts more than 30,000 visitors every year. It is a free festival that combines music with substance: alongside concerts there are debates, talks and the Freedom Meal.

✅ Free entry — the festival is completely free to attend. No ticket needed.

Liberation festivals across the Netherlands

On 5 May fourteen official liberation festivals are organised across the country, large and small. In Amsterdam the festival takes place in the Amstelpark, in Rotterdam on the Stadhuisplein, in The Hague in the Zuiderpark, in Groningen on the Grote Markt and in Utrecht in the Griftpark. Each festival has its own character and line-up — so wherever you live, there is always a liberation festival nearby. Still, for many people Haarlem stands out. The combination of the green park location, strong music programming and the intimate atmosphere of the Houtpark makes it the favourite for many visitors year after year.

Background

The festival has been running since 1980, starting as a small event in the Haarlemmerhout. The Houtpark is still its permanent home: a green city park with room to sit, stroll and dance. The atmosphere is more relaxed than at an ordinary music festival — people also come simply to be outdoors on a day that carries meaning.

What you’ll find

Music

The main stage features well-known Dutch acts. In previous years Kensington, Jett Rebel, Miss Montreal and Froukje performed. There is also a second stage for local and up-and-coming artists. The line-up is announced every April via bevrijdingspop.nl.

Freedom Meal

One of the more special elements: visitors sit together at long tables and share a meal. No separate programme, no entry fee — just people sitting down together and talking. The theme is always freedom; the details change every year.

Liberation Fire

The festival opens with the arrival of the Liberation Fire, which is lit at midnight on 4 May in Wageningen and travels across the country in a relay. In Haarlem it is welcomed with a short ceremony.

Children’s programme

The Kindervrijheidsplein (Children’s Freedom Square) offers workshops, face painting and children’s theatre. Ideal for families who want to spend the day together.
