Every year in late June, Amsterdam celebrates its diversity with the Amsterdam Roots Festival. For several days, world music fills parks, squares and venues across the city. Part of the programme is completely free — and that free part alone is worth the visit.

The Amsterdam Roots Festival has existed for over three decades. It has always had two sides: paid events in the Melkweg and other venues, and a free outdoor programme for everyone.

The heart of the free programme is the open-air stage in Vondelpark. Musicians from Africa, Asia, South America and the Middle East perform there for a crowd sitting on the grass, on folding chairs, or simply standing because the music is too good to sit down to. Around the stage a market springs up selling musical instruments, crafts and food from every corner of the world — items you won’t find in an ordinary shop, and dishes that recall places you’ve been or still want to go. The atmosphere is that of one big, relaxed neighbourhood party, just with the whole world as neighbours.
What sets Roots Festival apart from many other world music festivals is its programming. Artists are deliberately chosen from outside the mainstream — not the familiar names from world music charts, but musicians with something unique to offer, sometimes playing in the Netherlands for the first time. Anyone who comes with an open ear more often than not goes home with a new favourite.
For those wanting more than the free outdoor programme, there’s a ticketed evening programme at Melkweg and other Amsterdam venues, with concerts that add further depth to the festival. But the heart of the festival — and the reason it’s lasted thirty years — remains the accessible, free part in the park, which anyone can walk into without a threshold.
The Amsterdam Roots Festival takes place annually in late June; in 2027 that’s on Sunday 27 June. The outdoor programme in Vondelpark is free all day, while the festival weekend around it runs a little longer. Vondelpark is reachable by tram 1, 2, 5 or 11 to Leidseplein, from where it’s about a five-minute walk.
A practical tip: come to the free stage during the day and you’ll hear and see more than most festivalgoers experience in an entire weekend, without paying a cent.
