Brussels Jazz Weekend
The last weekend of May, Brussels becomes an open-air jazz festival. For three days, music fills the Grand Place, Marché aux Poissons, Place Sainte-Catherine and other squares. The largest free jazz festival in the Belgian capital — tens of thousands of visitors every year.
✅ Free admission — the Brussels Jazz Weekend is completely free. All concerts on the streets and squares are open to everyone.
Free entry — all concerts completely free, no ticket or registration needed.
What you’ll find
The Grand Place main stage is the undisputed highlight — Gothic guild houses as backdrop, a jazz band in front. Multiple stages across the city from mainstream jazz to experimental, New Orleans soul to contemporary European jazz.
The Grand-Place stage
The undisputed highlight is the main stage on the Grand-Place, one of the most beautiful squares in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Gothic guild houses and the city hall form a backdrop, the cobblestones lie underfoot, and a jazz band plays in front of it all — few locations in the world match that picture. The concerts are entirely free, and the terraces around the square fill up within minutes as a result.
Anyone who’d rather not stand at the front can just as easily enjoy the music from a terrace at the edge of the square — the sound carries effortlessly across the cobblestones into the smallest side streets.
Squares with their own identity
Besides the Grand-Place, stages stand on other central squares, each with its own musical identity. One stage brings mainstream jazz for a broad audience, another ventures into experimental sounds; here it’s New Orleans soul, there contemporary European jazz. That spread means visitors can put together their own route through the city, walking from square to square, style to style.
For anyone with a whole afternoon free, that walking is a programme in itself: crossing from one square to the next, occasionally lingering for a set that happens to be starting, almost accidentally assembling a personal festival line-up.
Brussels Jazz Weekend also makes an excellent excuse for a long weekend in the city. Beyond the music, Brussels offers plenty to fill a whole weekend: museums, restaurants, a rich beer history, and architecture that shows the passage of centuries. Combining the festival with the city itself makes for a complete weekend, especially for anyone who loves jazz but also enjoys discovering a city.
Brussels Jazz Weekend takes place in 2027 on the last weekend of May; exact dates are listed on the festival website. Access to all performances is entirely free, with no ticket or registration required.
The festival was originally set up with a clear goal in mind: bring jazz back to the street, away from concert halls and closer to the public. That approach worked, and the Brussels Jazz Weekend quickly grew into a fixture on the city’s festival calendar, finding a home on the historic squares of the centre, where the music blends effortlessly into everyday city life.
