Every June, the Danube Island in Vienna hosts one of the most extraordinary events in the world of music festivals: the Donauinselfest. With up to three million visitors over three days, it is consistently ranked as the world’s largest free music festival. In 2025 it returned for its 42nd edition — and entry remains completely free.
Free entry — completely free, no ticket needed.
A festival born from Viennese politics
The Donauinselfest was founded in 1983 by Vienna’s Social Democratic Party as a free cultural event for all Viennese citizens. What began as a political gesture quickly became one of Europe’s most beloved music festivals, transcending its political origins to become a genuine celebration of music, culture and Viennese community life.
What makes it extraordinary
With three million visitors and over 600 hours of programming across multiple stages, the Donauinselfest is simply gigantic. The programme runs from Austrian pop and rock to international stars, folk music, electronic dance music and hip-hop. The island itself is a unique festival location — a long, narrow artificial island in the Danube, with water views and a natural festival atmosphere. Despite hosting international headliners, all concerts are completely free.
