Dunya Festival Rotterdam
Every spring, Rotterdam’s Zuiderpark fills with world music, international cuisine and a crowd as diverse as the city itself. Dunya — meaning ‘world’ in Arabic — is exactly what the name promises: a celebration of cultures, flavours and sounds from every corner of the globe. Entry is completely free.

How it started
The Dunya Festival was founded in 1990 as a multicultural city festival to celebrate Rotterdam’s diversity. Over the years it grew into one of the city’s most popular events.

From African rhythms and Arabic music to Latin American sounds and Asian influences. Multiple stages, each with its own musical atmosphere.
World cuisine
Stalls from dozens of countries: tagine from Morocco, jerk chicken from Jamaica, biryani from India, injera from Ethiopia. Eat the world in one afternoon.
For many Rotterdam artists with a migration background, playing Dunya carries an extra layer of meaning — it’s the stage they once dreamed about as children, now with their own name on the bill.
Beyond the music, the food is a reason to come in its own right. Stalls from dozens of countries serve dishes you won’t easily find elsewhere: tagine from Morocco, jerk chicken from Jamaica, biryani from India, injera from Ethiopia. Spend an afternoon wandering through Zuiderpark and you’ll effectively taste the whole world in a few hours.
Around the food stalls a kind of meeting place naturally forms: strangers start chatting about where a dish comes from, then wander on together to the next stage.
What makes Dunya different
What sets Dunya apart from many other multicultural festivals is how natural it feels. The festival fits Rotterdam the way Rotterdam is itself: direct, open, without pretence. Zuiderpark is large enough to give it room — visitors wander around, linger at a performance that catches them, and discover something else ten minutes later. No one needs to follow a tight schedule; the festival works precisely because you can let it lead you.
Zuiderpark is easy to reach by tram or bus from Rotterdam Centraal, and given the free entry, many visitors simply drop by for an hour between other plans and end up staying for most of the day.
The Dunya Festival made its comeback in Zuiderpark on Sunday 5 July 2026; the date for 2027 has not yet been announced. Access to all stages and activities in the park is entirely free, and the festival takes place in Zuiderpark, Rotterdam.
Founded in 1990 as a multicultural city festival, Dunya set out to celebrate Rotterdam’s diversity. Rotterdam has long been a port city with a population representing the whole world, and Dunya was, from the very start, a festival for and by that diverse community — grown over the years into one of the city’s most popular events, drawing tens of thousands of visitors per edition.
