Live jazzmuziek op de Grote Markt tijdens het gratis Haarlem Jazz & More festival

Haarlem Jazz & More

✅ Free entry — the Haarlem Jazz & More Festival is completely free. All outdoor performances are open to everyone in the historic city centre.

Every August, Haarlem’s historic centre turns into one big, free stage for three days. Haarlem Jazz & More fills the Grote Markt and the surrounding streets with live music — from classic jazz to soul, funk and world music — and, as with most festivals on this site, access to all outdoor stages is completely free.

The festival has been running for decades and has grown over that time from a modest local jazz event into a festival with a national reputation. What began as a handful of performances around the Grote Markt grew into a three-day programme that draws established Dutch jazz musicians and international acts alike. The standard is high: this isn’t background music for a terrace, but a programmed festival with serious artistic ambition.

The real highlight of Haarlem Jazz & More might be the setting itself. The Grote Markt ranks among the most beautiful festival squares in the Netherlands: medieval facades on every side, the Sint-Bavo church towering in the background, and an open square that fills effortlessly with chairs, stalls and crowds. At sunset, as the light falls across the facades and the music swells, the combination — square, church, sound — is hard to beat. Once you’ve stood there, you understand immediately why this festival has lasted so long.

Around the main stages on the Grote Markt, smaller performances spread through the city centre: cafes and squares that are normally just ordinary Haarlem hospitality venues become part of the festival grounds for a weekend. Shops, cafes and restaurants all benefit, and that interplay between city and festival is exactly what gives the event its character. There’s no strict fence marking off the festival site — the city itself is the backdrop, and visitors wander effortlessly from one performance to the next, with a different terrace or alley as a stop along the way.

Since its first edition, the festival has grown in scale without losing its original character. Where many city festivals become more commercial over the years, Haarlem Jazz & More has managed to keep the focus on musical quality. Programmers deliberately mix established names with lesser-known acts, resulting in a line-up that captivates both seasoned jazz fans and casual passers-by.

In 2027, Haarlem Jazz & More takes place in mid-August (exact dates to be announced), on the Grote Markt and throughout Haarlem’s city centre. Access to all outdoor stages is completely free. Haarlem station is about a ten-minute walk from the festival grounds, and bus connections to the centre are good too. Anyone who prefers a quieter stroll between performances should go on Friday evening; Saturday is traditionally the busiest day of the weekend. Up-to-date programme information can be found via haarlemjazz.nl.

Anyone wanting to stretch the weekend a little longer can easily combine the festival with a trip to Zandvoort aan Zee, a quarter of an hour’s cycle from the centre. A refreshing swim in the sea by day, back to the Grote Markt in the evening for the last sets: that combination of beach and city festival makes for a complete weekend in Haarlem. The programme also works well for families — many performances start early in the afternoon, well before the real evening programme kicks off.

For anyone who loves jazz but would rather not buy an expensive festival ticket, this weekend in Haarlem is one of the few occasions where a historic city centre and a seriously programmed festival come together completely — without anyone having to pay for it.
