NOS Alive Free Zones
NOS Alive is one of Europe’s largest and most respected music festivals. Every July it draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to Algés on the edge of Lisbon for acts like Foo Fighters, Florence + The Machine and Nick Cave. But those without a ticket can still taste the festival atmosphere. Around the official site, there are always free zones with music, food and the typical energy of a large summer festival.

What the free zones offer
Around the festival site in Algés, a spontaneous festival village emerges every year — stalls, terraces, music from nearby cafés and the atmosphere of thousands of festival-goers wandering around before and after shows. Even without a ticket, the day is worth the trip.
Lisbon as a base
NOS Alive is also an ideal opportunity to combine the festival with a cultural city trip to Lisbon. Algés lies directly on the River Tagus, with views of Lisbon and the 25 de Abril Bridge. Combine with a visit to nearby Belém — the Tower of Belém and Jerónimos Monastery are within walking distance.
What makes those free zones special is the location. Algés sits directly on the river Tagus, with views over Lisbon and the 25 de Abril bridge — a stunning backdrop you can take in even without a festival ticket. A walk along the waterfront, a terrace overlooking the river, and occasionally the sound of the festival drifting over: it’s one of the few places where you can feel a major international festival from a distance without needing to stand in the middle of it.
NOS Alive is also an excellent moment to combine Lisbon with a cultural city break. Explore the city by day, head to the free outdoor zones in the evening, or, for anyone who’s secured a ticket, go into the festival itself. The whole city carries an atmosphere that whole week that’s hard to find at any other time of year: bars, clubs and cultural venues put on extra events tied to the festival mood, some of them free to attend as well.
A parallel festival nobody organises
What sets NOS Alive apart from many other major festivals is exactly that layer around it. While the main programme unfolds behind the gates, a parallel celebration forms in the city itself — one nobody organises but that returns every year regardless, carried by the visitors themselves, local hospitality, and the energy that a festival of this calibre naturally brings with it.
NOS Alive takes place in 2027 from 8 to 10 July in Algés, just outside Lisbon. The free outdoor zones and surrounding activities are open to everyone; tickets for the official festival grounds are available via nosalive.com. Algés is easily reached from central Lisbon by train from Cais do Sodré station, a journey of about ten minutes.
