For ten days in June, Terschelling is not just an island. The Oerol Festival takes over the entire island — dunes, beaches, forests, barns — filling it with theatre, music and art installations. Around 50,000 visitors, but it never feels like a mass event.
Partially free — some performances are freely accessible. For paid performances, you need a pass or single ticket. Check oerol.nl for what’s free.
The whole island as a stage
Oerol has existed since 1982, set up by Joop Mulder. The name means ‘everywhere’ in the local dialect. The whole island is the stage — from West-Terschelling to remote spots like the Boschplaat nature reserve.
What you’ll find
Site-specific theatre
Theatre in a dune valley, a barn, along the mudflats. Nature participates — wind, tide, light. Every year is different.
Music
The Westerkeyn in West-Terschelling is the beating heart of the festival — concerts from indie and folk to jazz, day and evening.
Expeditions
Some performances are only reachable by bike or on foot, kilometres from civilisation. The journey there is part of the experience.
