Ommegang Brussels

Every July, Brussels’ Grand Place transforms into a living theatre for the Ommegang — one of Europe’s most spectacular historical processions. Over 1,400 volunteers in authentic costumes recreate the legendary 1549 procession of Emperor Charles V.

Partially free — most of the route is free to watch; grandstand seats are paid.

A living piece of history

Revived in 1930 after its 14th-century origins, the Ommegang is recognised as one of Belgium’s most important intangible cultural heritage events. The procession includes nobles, guild representatives, soldiers, acrobats, falconers and giant figures on the UNESCO World Heritage Grand Place.
