Caribbean music and parade during Summer Carnival in Rotterdam

Summer Carnival Rotterdam

On one day in July, Rotterdam transforms completely. The Summer Carnival is a street festival with Caribbean roots — in peak years nearly one million visitors attend. The Street Parade passes along the Coolsingel and the Erasmus Bridge.

✅ Free admission — the Rotterdam Summer Carnival street parade is completely free to watch.

Free entry — the Street Parade and all open-air celebrations are freely accessible.

How it started

The Summer Carnival started in 1984 as the Antillean Summer Carnival, set up by the Antillean community in Rotterdam to make their culture visible.

What you’ll find

The Street Parade

A kilometre-long procession with thousands of dancers in extravagant costumes of feathers, sequins and tropical colours. Brass bands, steel drums, DJs. Arrive early for a good spot along the Coolsingel.

Music and stages

Stages across the city with reggae, dancehall, Latin pop and afrobeat — all day long.

Mercado

Caribbean and Latin American cuisine — Surinamese bara, Antillean pastechi, Brazilian pão de queijo and much more.

Battle of Drums

A brass band competition that makes the streets vibrate — spectacular and infectious.

The kilometre-long Street Parade forms the heart of the day, with thousands of dancers in elaborate costumes of feathers, sequins and tropical colours. Every group brings its own theme, music — brass bands, steel drums, DJs — and story, together forming a procession that can easily run for hours along the Coolsingel and the Erasmusbrug.

Stages across the city keep the music going with reggae, dancehall, Latin pop and afrobeat throughout the day, and once evening falls the party simply continues at afterparties in clubs and bars across Rotterdam.

Anyone unsure what Caribbean street food actually tastes like should head straight for the Mercado and just start trying things — from Surinamese bara to Antillean pastechi and Brazilian pão de queijo.

The Battle of Drums pits brass bands against each other in a competition that shakes the streets — loud, spectacular and infectious all at once.

Warming-up events

In the days before the parade, free warming-up events take over the city: workshops, dance lessons and costume-making sessions that are just as much part of the tradition as the parade itself.

What sets Zomercarnaval apart from many of the Netherlands’ other summer street festivals is how visible its origins remain, even now that it has grown into an event for almost a million people. The Caribbean roots never disappeared — they’ve simply been shared more widely.

Zomercarnaval takes place in 2027 in late July (exact date to be announced) in the centre of Rotterdam. The parade and all open-air festivities are free to attend. The festival is easy to reach via Rotterdam Centraal station or by metro to Beurs or Blaak, and anyone hoping for a good spot along the route should arrive well ahead of time.

Zomercarnaval began in 1984 as the Antillean Summer Carnival, set up by Rotterdam’s Antillean community to make their culture visible in the city. What started as a celebration within one community has since grown into a festival that draws visitors from across the Netherlands and well beyond.
