Every July, the historic city centre of Dordrecht transforms into one huge festival ground. Big Rivers is one of the largest free events in the Netherlands: three days of music across ten stages, spread over the squares and streets of Holland’s oldest city. The 2026 edition ran from Friday 10 to Sunday 12 July and marked the festival’s 25th edition.
✅ Free admission — Big Rivers is entirely free to visit. No tickets, no fences around the whole site: just walk into the city centre and wander from stage to stage.

From blues festival to city celebration
Big Rivers started in 1998 as the Rhythm & Blues Festival Dordrecht and grew over more than two decades into a broadly programmed city festival built around blues, pop and roots. Every year, more than 140,000 visitors make their way to the city. In 2024, Big Rivers was even named the best public event in the Netherlands — a title that underlines its status as one of the country’s favourite festivals.
150+ acts across 10 stages
With more than 150 acts on ten stages, Big Rivers has one of the broadest line-ups in the Netherlands. Performances take place across the city centre, including at Grotekerksplein, Grote Markt, Statenplaats, Stadhuisplein, Spuiboulevard, Wijnstraat, Aardappelmarkt, Korte Kalkhaven, Houttuinen and De Waag, plus the Brut Garden on Groenmarkt. For the 2026 edition, the bill included Carlo Poddighe, The Few, PFAS, RockFour and Frank and the Club, alongside numerous local and regional acts. The full programme was announced via the festival app.
Atmosphere and crowd
What sets Big Rivers apart is its scale: rather than one enclosed festival ground, the entire city centre of Dordrecht becomes the stage. Visitors wander effortlessly from a blues band on one square to a pop act around the corner, past historic façades and canals. The crowd is a broad mix of locals, day-trippers and music fans from the region, from young to old — precisely why the festival was crowned the Netherlands’ best public event in 2024.
Location and practical info
If you’re travelling by car, expect road closures in the city centre. Free parking is available at Weeskinderendijk (first 24 hours, ticket required), a ten-minute walk from the stages; an alternative is the car park at Energiehuis. The festival itself recommends coming by bike or public transport — the city centre is easily reached by train and bus, and there are guarded bike parks at Raamstraat and Kolfstraat.
