The Netherlands is one of the best countries in Europe for free festivals. From King’s Day on 27 April and the Liberation Day festivals on 5 May to the Vierdaagsefeesten in Nijmegen in July, there is a free party almost every weekend from spring to autumn. Many events take place in city centres, parks or on the beach, so you can simply walk in without a ticket. Peak season runs from May to September. Tip: travel by train or bike, as parking in city centres is often difficult, and check the festival website for the latest programme.
